Psalms 90

Psalms 90 is a prayer of Moses where he reflects on the eternity and sovereignty of GOD. This psalm presents a beautiful picture of the eternal nature of GOD and the fleeting nature of human life. As we dive into this psalm, let us explore the themes of GOD’S eternity and sovereignty, our mortality, and the significance of living in light of these truths.

Verse 1-2: “LORD, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are GOD.”

In these opening verses, Moses acknowledges God as the eternal and unchanging dwelling place of His people. He recognizes that GOD has existed even before the earth and the world were formed and will continue to exist from everlasting to everlasting. This truth reminds us of GOD’S unfathomable eternity and constant presence in our lives.

Verses 3-6: “You return man to dust and say, ‘Return, O children of man!’ For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.”

Moses reflects on the transient nature of human life, comparing it to a fleeting moment in GOD’S sight. Our lives are but a breath compared to the eternal nature of GOD. This truth humbles us and helps us recognize our dependence on GOD.

Verses 7-11: “For we are brought to an end by your anger; by your wrath we are dismayed. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. For all our days pass away under your wrath; we bring our years to an end like a sigh. The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you?”

Moses acknowledges the reality of sin and the consequences of GOD’S wrath. He recognizes the brevity of human life and the significance of living in the fear of GOD. This is a sobering reminder that our sin separates us from GOD, and we need to seek His mercy and forgiveness.

Verses 12-17: “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. Let the favor of the LORD our GOD be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!”

In these concluding verses, Moses prays for God’s wisdom and mercy to be upon His people. He asks for GOD’S steadfast love to satisfy them, for His power to be revealed, and for His favor to be upon them. This prayer reflects the longing of every believer to live a life that is pleasing to GOD and to experience His grace and mercy each day.

Let us Pray:

Dear LORD, almighty HEAVENLY FATHER, We come before you in awe of your eternal and unchanging nature. You have been our dwelling place in all generations, and from everlasting to everlasting, You are GOD. We acknowledge your sovereignty and recognize our dependence on you. Help us to trust in your eternal nature and find our rest in You. We confess the fleeting nature of our lives and our sinfulness before You. Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom. We long for Your mercy and forgiveness to cleanse us from our sins and to satisfy us with Your steadfast love. We ask for your grace to be upon us and for your mighty power to be revealed in our lives. May our hearts be filled with reverence for You, our days be marked by Your favor, and our work be established by Your hands. Help us to live each day in the fear of You and to rejoice in the hope of Your salvation. Thank you for Your unfailing infinite love and presence in our lives and for all blessings that You bestowed upon us. We pray all these things throughout the mighty, glorious, fulfilling name of JESUS CHRIST. Amen!

Much LoVe, JoY, Peace and Blessings to You, through JESUS CHRIST, our LORD, SAVIOUR and REDEEMER.
