Psalms 139

Welcome to the Bible study on the book of Psalms, chapter 139.

Verse 1: “O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.”

This verse reminds us that GOD knows us intimately and personally. He knows our thoughts, fears, and strengths. There is nothing hidden from Him. This should encourage us to be honest and open with GOD, knowing that He already knows everything about us.

Verse 2: “You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.”

GOD’S knowledge of us goes beyond just what we say or do. He knows our innermost thoughts and understands our motives. This verse highlights the fact that GOD is ever present and attentive to us, no matter where we are.

Verse 3: “You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.”

This verse reinforces the idea that GOD’S knowledge of us is all encompassing. Whether we are active or at rest, GOD is aware of our actions, emotions, and circumstances. He is constantly watching over us with His everlasting, infinite love and care.

Verse 4: “You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD.”

GOD’S omniscience is beyond our comprehension. He knows our words before they leave our lips. This should prompt us to speak with honesty and humility, knowing that GOD already knows the true intentions behind our words.

Verse 5: “You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.”

This verse depicts GOD as our constant companion, leading and protecting us. He goes before us, making a way, and follows behind, guarding us from harm. This should give us confidence and peace, knowing that GOD is always with us.

Verse 6: “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!”

The psalmist acknowledges the incomprehensibility of GOD’S knowledge and presence. It is beyond human wisdom and understanding. This should lead us to humility and awe, recognizing the greatness of GOD and His intimate involvement in our lives.

Verse 7: “I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from Your presence!”

No matter where we go, GOD is there. This verse emphasizes the inescapable beautiful, divine nature of GOD’S presence. It should comfort us to know that we are never alone, and there is no place where GOD cannot reach us with His infinite love and grace.

Verse 8: “If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.”

GOD’S presence surpasses all boundaries, reaching even to the depths of Sheol and the heights of heaven. This should give us a sense of security and assurance that GOD is with us in every circumstance.

Verse 9: “If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,”

Even in the most distant and remote places, GOD is there. He is not limited by time or space. This verse highlights the omnipresence of GOD, reinforcing the truth that there is nowhere we can go where GOD is not already present.

Verse 10: “even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.”

No matter where we find ourselves, GOD’S hand is there to guide and protect us. This should give us confidence and trust, knowing that GOD’S strength is available to us in every situation.

Verse 11: “I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night”

Even in the darkest and most challenging moments, GOD’S presence and knowledge are with us. This verse highlights the idea that nothing is hidden from GOD, and there is no situation where He cannot bring His light and truth.

Verse 12: “but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.”

GOD’S omniscience and omnipresence are not limited by darkness or light. There is no hiding from God. This should encourage us to be open and honest with Him, knowing that He sees and understands all things.

Verse 13: “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

This verse emphasizes GOD’S intimate involvement in our creation. He carefully formed and crafted us, knowing us even before we were born. This should lead us to a greater appreciation for GOD’S love and care for us as His creation.

Verse 14: “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous how well I know it.”

The Psalmist expresses gratitude for the intricate design of their being. This verse should prompt us to praise and thank GOD for His amazing work in creating us with such complexity and wonder.

Verse 15: “You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.”

Even before we were born, GOD was attentively watching over us. This verse reinforces the idea that GOD’S knowledge and presence extend to the earliest moments of our existence.

Verse 16: “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”

GOD’S knowledge of our lives goes beyond just our physical form. He has a plan and purpose for us, knowing our days and moments even before they unfold. This should give us confidence and trust in GOD’S sovereign care for our lives.

Verse 17: “How precious are your thoughts about me, O GOD. They cannot be numbered!”

GOD’S thoughts and care for us are beyond measure. This verse should lead us to a greater appreciation for GOD’S love and concern for us, recognizing that we are deeply cherished by Him.

Verse 18: “I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!”

The psalmist marvels at the abundance of GOD’S thoughts and care for us. This verse should prompt us to meditate on the depth of GOD’S infinite love for us and find comfort in the fact that He is always with us.

Verse 19: “O GOD, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers!”

The tone of the psalm changes here as the psalmist calls on GOD to judge and remove the wicked from their life. This demonstrates the psalmist’s desire for justice and righteousness.

Verse 20: “They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name.”

The psalmist further highlights the wickedness of those who oppose GOD and misuse His name. This should serve as a reminder of the seriousness of honoring and revering GOD’S name.

Verse 21: “O LORD, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you?”

The psalmist grapples with the emotions of hating those who hate GOD. This verse prompts us to consider our own attitudes and responses toward those who oppose GOD and His ways.

Verse 22: “Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies.”

The psalmist’s hatred is directed at those who oppose GOD, aligning themselves with GOD’S enemies. This verse challenges us to examine our own allegiances and attitudes toward those who stand against GOD.

Verse 23: “Search me, O GOD, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”

The psalmist shifts back to a personal reflection, inviting GOD to search and test their heart and thoughts. This verse prompts us to consider if we are open and willing to allow GOD to examine and refine us.

Verse 24: “Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”

The psalm concludes with a prayer for GOD to reveal anything in the psalmist that may offend Him. This verse reminds us to seek GOD’S guidance and correction as we pursue a life of righteousness and eternal significance.

Let us Pray:

Dear LORD, almighty HEAVENLY FATHER, You know me so intimately; you know my every thought, my every action, and my every need. You have searched me and known me, and I am grateful for your unwavering love and understanding. Thank you dear LORD, almighty HEAVENLY FATHER, for creating me in Your image and for knowing every detail of my life. Help me to embrace the truth that I am fearfully and wonderfully made by Your hands. Guide me along the path of righteousness and lead me in the way everlasting. Help me to see myself through Your eyes and to live a life that brings glory to Your name.
Thank you for never leaving my side and for always being there to comfort and guide me. I pray that I may always be conscious of Your presence in my life and rely on Your strength to face each day. May I find peace in the knowledge that You are always with me and that Your infinite love for me is never ending. Help me to trust in Your divine plan for my life and to rest in the knowledge that You have everything under control. Thank you dear LORD almighty HEAVENLY FATHER. I pray this throughout the mighty glorious fulfilling name of JESUS CHRIST. Amen!

Much LoVe, JoY, Peace and Blessings to You, through JESUS CHRIST, our LORD, SAVIOUR and REDEEMER
