Zechariah 2

Welcome to the next Bible Study of the book of Zechariah, Chapter 2:

Verse 1: “I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand.”

Here, Zechariah sees a vision of a man who appears to be measuring Jerusalem. The measuring line represents the assessment of the city’s dimensions and implies divine scrutiny and attention to its completeness and security.

Verse 2: “Then said I, Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth and what is the length thereof.”

Zechariah inquires about the purpose of this measuring. The focus on the dimensions highlights the significance of Jerusalem, especially after the Babylonian exile, emphasizing that GOD is concerned with the restoration and future of His city and His people.

Verse 3: “And, behold, the angel that talked with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him.”

This moment underscores the presence of angels in GOD’S plans, suggesting that divine messengers are actively involved in guiding and communicating GOD’S mighty, fulfilling purposes for Jerusalem.

Verse 4: “And said unto him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein.”

This beautiful, encouraging message reflects as a wonderful fulfilling promise of prosperity and growth for Jerusalem. The phrase “towns without walls” implies a glorious future where the city will be so filled with people and livestock that it won’t need physical protection highlighting safety and abundance.

Verse 5: “For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.”

Our almighty sovereign, reigning dear God assures the people that He will protect Jerusalem not through physical walls but as a divine, impenetrable barrier. “Glory” also indicates His presence among His people, signifying both protection and blessing.

Verse 6: “Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the LORD: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the LORD.”

This verse serves as a call for the people in exile to return to Jerusalem. The “land of the north” most likely refers to Babylon, indicating a divine command for those scattered to return home.

Verse 7: “Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon.”

The plea to Zion illustrates a call to those living in Babylon to break free from its influence and come back to the holy city, emphasizing the need for spiritual and physical separation from captivity.

Verse 8: “For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.”

Here our almighty God reaffirms His protective covenant with Israel. The imagery of “the apple of His eye” signifies His intimate care and protection over His people, indicating that any harm done to them is taken very seriously by GOD!.

Verse 9: “For, behold, I will shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me.”

GOD promises retribution upon those who have harmed Israel. The idea of shaking His hand relates to divine intervention, indicating that the oppressors will become victims of their own actions.

Verse 10: “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD.”

This is a significant call to joy and celebration, emphasizing GOD’S mighty intention to restore and dwell among His people, bringing hope and renewal in their circumstances.

Verse 11: “And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee.”

This prophecy extends beyond Israel, indicating that our almighty GOD will gather nations to Himself, creating a diverse community of true believers. This reflects the inclusive nature of GOD’S glorious, redemptive plan.

Verse 12: “And the LORD shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again.”

This verse signifies GOD’S claim over Judah and Jerusalem, restoring them to a place of honor and abundant blessings. It emphasizes the sacredness of the land and GOD’S sovereign divine will.

Verse 13: “Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.”

This concluding verse calls for reverence and silence before the Lord almighty, recognizing His authority and the divine movements He is orchestrating. It expresses both awe and the seriousness of GOD’S mighty presence.
