Zechariah 5

Welcome to the next Bible Study of the book of Zechariah, Chapter 5:

Vers 1:”Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.”

The “flying roll” represents a scroll, likely indicative of a message or prophetic revelation. The act of lifting up his eyes suggests a heightened sense of awareness and divine revelation. In the context of Zechariah’s visions, this scroll will convey significant truths about GOD’S judgment.

Vers 2: “And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.”

The dimensions of the scroll reveal its importance and prominence, approximately 30 feet long and 15 feet wide. The size of the scroll indicates that what is inscribed is weighty and significant its message cannot be easily ignored.

Vers 3: “Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.”

The scroll contains a curse, highlighting GOD’S judgment against sin, specifically against stealing and false swearing. The emphasis on “the whole earth” indicates that this judgment affects all people universally, underscoring the seriousness of these offenses in the eyes of GOD.

Vers 4: “I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.”

GOD’S judgment will personally invade the households of those guilty of these transgressions. The imagery portrays a complete destruction that will affect both the physical structure of their homes and their very lives. This signifies a divine response that is both thorough and unavoidable.

Vers 5: “Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.”

The angel prompts Zechariah to observe another significant element of his vision, enhancing the urgency of understanding GOD’S message. The phrase “what goeth forth” suggests an active and ongoing process, indicating that GOD’S judgment is in motion.

Vers :6 “And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.”

The ephah is a standard measure for grain, suggesting a weighing or measuring out of something significant. This could symbolize the moral and spiritual assessment of the people, indicating that GOD is evaluating their actions. “Their resemblance” implies a collective identity or sin among the people.

Vers 7: “And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.”

The “woman” in the ephah symbolizes wickedness, and the lead cover may signify the weight and burden of sin. The woman’s presence represents the pervasive nature of evil in society, suggesting that corruption is both hidden and yet contained until GOD sends His judgment.

Vers 8: “And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.”

The angel identifies the woman as “wickedness,” and her confinement within the ephah portrays an act of divine judgment. The weight of lead signifies a sealing, as if to ensure that wickedness is encapsulated and will not influence the people further.

Vers 9: “Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.”

The appearance of the two women with stork like wings can symbolize a swift executing of GOD’S command. Storks are often seen as carriers, indicating that these women will take the wickedness away, further suggesting divine intervention in dealing with sin.

Vers 10: “Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah?”

Zechariah’s question shows his desire to understand where wickedness is being sent. This indicates that the removal of wickedness is a part of GOD’S restoration process.

Vers 11: “And he said unto me, To build it a house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.”

Shinar is often associated with Babylon, a symbol of rebellion against GOD. The construction of a house for wickedness suggests that it will have a designated place, but it also emphasizes GOD’S sovereignty in containing and isolating evil. This may imply the eventual judgment of Babylon and its system.

Summary and Reflection:

We see GOD’S clear declaration of judgment against sin, the importance of moral integrity, and His commitment to dealing with wickedness. It serves as both a warning and a comfort, reminding believers that GOD is truly aware of the injustices in the world and will ultimately address them.
