Zechariah 9

Welcome to the next Bible Study of the book of Zechariah, Chapter 9:

Verse 1: “The burden of the Word of the LORD in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the LORD.”

This verse introduces a prophetic burden, indicating a heavy message about nations surrounding Israel. Hadrach and Damascus symbolize regions significant to Israel’s history and future, and it sets the tone for focusing on GOD’S sovereignty.

Verse 2: “And Hamath also shall border thereby; Tyrus, and Zidon, though it be very wise.”

The mention of Hamath, Tyre, and Sidon emphasizes cities known for their strength and wisdom. Yet, no human wisdom can stand against GOD’S divine plans, reminding us of the futility of relying solely on human strategy.

Verse 3: “And Tyrus did build herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets.”

This illustrates the pride and arrogance of Tyre, showcasing material wealth. It serves as a caution about the dangers of accumulating wealth and relying on it rather than on GOD.

Verse 4: “Behold, the Lord will cast her out, and he will smite her power in the sea; and she shall be devoured with fire.”

GOD’S judgment against Tyre shows that despite their efforts to fortify and protect themselves, divine authority prevails. It serves as a reminder that true security comes not from our resources but from GOD.

Verse 5: “Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Gaza also shall see it, and be very sorrowful, and Ekron; for her expectation shall be ashamed; and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited.”

The fear of neighboring cities indicates the ripple effect of GOD’S judgment. It reflects the reality that GOD’S actions generate recognition of His power among nations and calls them to consider their own fate.

Verse 6: “And a bastard shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines.”

The “bastard” may refer to non-Israelites; this prophecy highlights a change in power dynamics. GOD’S promise includes humbling the proud, showing that He can use any situation for His purposes.

Verse 7: “And I will take away his blood out of his mouth, and his abominations from between his teeth: but he that remaineth, even he shall be for our GOD, and he shall be as a governor in Judah, and Ekron as a Jebusite.”

GOD will cleanse the Philistines, showcasing transformational power and salvation. This verse also indicates hope for a remnant that will turn to GOD, emphasizing His desire for inclusion and redemption.

Verse 8: “And I will encamp about mine house because of the army, because of him that passeth by, and because of him that returneth: and no oppressor shall pass through them any more: for now have I seen with mine eyes.”

This highlights GOD’S protective presence around His people. The assurance of no more oppression promises divine protection, reassuring us of GOD’S attentive love and justice.

Verse 9: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

A significant messianic prophecy about CHRIST’S triumphal entry. It emphasizes the humility of JESUS, showcasing His authority is grounded in service and love, encouraging us to respond with joy and anticipation.

Verse 10: “And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.”

This verse proclaims a future of peace brought by the Messiah. It reassures believers that GOD’S ultimate plan includes extending His peace to all humanity, breaking the cycle of conflict.

Verse 11: “As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.”

The “blood of the covenant” speaks of redemption and freedom. GOD’S commitment to His covenant people promises deliverance and restoration, highlighting His faithfulness even in dire situations.

Verse 12: “Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee.”

A call to hope and a stronghold in GOD. This passage inspires faith in GOD’S restorative power, emphasizing that hope can be sustained even in challenging circumstances.

Verse 13: “When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man.”

GOD equips His people for battle, signifying strength in unity. It portrays a vigorous uprising of His people against their oppressors, a symbol of GOD’S empowerment for those who follow Him.

Verse 14: “And the LORD shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the LORD GOD shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.”

This portrays GOD’S active presence in battle, demonstrating His might. It encourages believers to understand GOD’S participation in their struggles, assuring them that they are not alone.

Verse 15: “The LORD of hosts shall defend them; for they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.”

The imagery of victory and abundance paints a picture of GOD’S gracious provision following triumph. It speaks of joy, fulfillment, and divine support on behalf of GOD’S people.

Verse 16: “And the LORD their GOD shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.”

This verse emphasizes the loving relationship between GOD and His people. The metaphor of the flock shows care and connection, while the imagery of a crown signifies honor and value bestowed upon them.

Verse 17: “For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! Corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.”

A conclusion that celebrates GOD’S goodness and beauty. This verse calls for joy and appreciation for His blessings, reminding us to rejoice in the daily provisions from GOD.
