Romans Chapter 1

Welcome to a new Bible Study of Romans Chapter 1:

Let’s take an inspiring verse by verse look at “Romans 1:1-32“, followed with a summary and prayer.

Verse 1: Paul, a servant of JESUS CHRIST, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of GOD,

Paul identifies himself as a servant and apostle of JESUS CHRIST. This introduces the theme of his letter the gospel, which is the good news about JESUS CHRIST. It shows his humility in service and the calling he has received.

Verse 2: Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,

Paul emphasizes that the gospel is not a new concept but was foretold in the Old Testament. This connection underlines the continuity of GOD’S divine plan through history.

Verse 3: Concerning His Son JESUS CHRIST our LORD, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

Here, Paul clarifies the devine nature of JESUS. He is both divine (Son of GOD) and human (descendant of David). This duality is crucial for understanding CHRIST’S role in salvation.

Verse 4: And declared to be the Son of GOD with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: even JESUS CHRIST our LORD,

The resurrection is central to the Christian faith, confirming JESUS’ identity and authority as the Son of GOD. It highlights the power of GOD in bringing life from death.

Verse 5: By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:

Paul talks about the grace he has received and his mission to spread the gospel. It points to a universal call for all nations to obey the faith in CHRIST.

Verse 6: Among whom are ye also the called of JESUS CHRIST:

Paul addresses the Romans, reminding them that they too are called by JESUS. This inclusion encourages them and reinforces their identity in CHRIST.

Verse 7: To all that be in Rome, beloved of GOD, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from GOD our FATHER, and the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Paul emphasizes the identity of believers as “beloved of GOD” and “called to be saints.” The greeting of grace and peace highlights the essence of the gospel.

Verse 8: First, I thank my GOD through JESUS CHRIST for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

Paul expresses gratitude for the Roman believers, acknowledging their vibrant faith. Their reputation worldwide serves as an encouragement and testimony of their witness.

Verse 9: For GOD is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers.

Paul shares about his deep commitment to prayer for the Romans. His service is heartfelt, demonstrating the Apostle’s pastoral care for the church.

Verse 10: Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of GOD to come unto you.

Paul expresses a longing to visit the Romans, motivated by the will of GOD. This demonstrates the significance of fellowship among believers.

Verse 11: For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;

Paul desires to strengthen the church through spiritual gifts. It emphasizes the importance of community and mutual support in faith.

Verse 12: That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

Spiritual growth is often a shared experience. Paul recognizes the mutual encouragement and comfort found in fellowship among believers.

Verse 13: Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.

Despite his intentions, Paul has faced obstacles in visiting the Romans. This highlights the reality of spiritual work, where intentions may be hindered by circumstances.

Verse 14: I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.

Paul feels a sense of obligation to share the gospel with all people, regardless of their background. This reflects the universal nature of the gospel message.

Verse 15: So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

Paul expresses eagerness to fulfill his calling. This zeal is characteristic of enthusiastic believers who recognize the urgency of sharing the beautiful, fulfilling gospel.

Verse 16: For I am not ashamed of the gospel of CHRIST: for it is the power of GOD unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

This is one of the most powerful statements in Paul’s letter. The gospel is not merely a message; it is the embodiment of GOD’S mighty power for salvation for all who believe.

Verse 17: For therein is the righteousness of GOD revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Paul asserts that the righteousness of GOD is revealed through the gospel. Living by faith is a central theme, establishing a foundation for the life of a true believer.

Verses 18-20: For the wrath of GOD is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of GOD is manifest in them; for GOD hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Paul introduces the concept of GOD’S wrath against sin. He explains that GOD has made Himself known through creation, leaving humanity without excuse for their disbelief.

Verses 21-23: Because that, when they knew GOD, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible GOD into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Humanity’s refusal to acknowledge GOD leads to darkened hearts and foolishness. This decline into idolatry illustrates the consequences of ignoring GOD’S revelation.

Verses 24-27: Wherefore GOD also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of GOD into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause GOD gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.

This section speaks to the consequences of sin and rebellion against GOD’S natural order. Paul highlights sexual immorality as a manifestation of humanity’s departure from GOD.

Verses 28-32: And even as they did not like to retain GOD in their knowledge, GOD gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of GOD, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of GOD, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

These verses outlines the moral decay that occurs when society turns away from GOD. It serves as a warning against a life devoid of GOD’S influence, resulting in a myriad of sins and unfaithfulness.

Summary:

In Romans 1:1-32, the Apostle Paul presents an introduction to the gospel of JESUS CHRIST, rooted in the entirety of Scripture and inclusive of all people. He asserts the centrality of faith and the righteousness of GOD while outlining the severe consequences of rejecting GOD’S revelation and turning to unrighteousness. The passage serves as both an encouragement and a warning, urging believers to remain steadfast in their faith while recognizing the dire state of the world without GOD.

You’re absolutely right Sister Nancy; “Romans 1:21-22” speaks to the consequences of turning away from GOD and how it leads to a darkened understanding. It’s heartbreaking to see the impact of callous hearts and the foolishness that can arise when people reject GOD’S truth. Yet, as believers, we are called to be lights in this world “Matthew5:14-16”, sharing His infinite love and truth with those around us. In times like these, it’s certainly essential for us to remain steadfast in our faith and continue praying for those who may not yet recognize GOD’S presence in their lives. We can ask GOD for opportunities to share His marvelous righteous Word and reflect His infinite love in our actions.
