Romans Chapter 5

Welcome to a new Bible Study of Romans Chapter 5:

Let’s reason and take an inspiring verse by verse look at “Romans 5:1-21”, followed with a Summary and Prayer.

Verse 1: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with GOD through our LORD JESUS CHRIST.”

This verse establishes that justification (being declared righteous) comes through faith in JESUS CHRIST. As a result, believers have peace with GOD, which indicates reconciliation after a state of enmity due to sin.

Verse 2: “By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of GOD.”

Here, Paul explains that through JESUS, believers gain access to GOD’S grace. This grace enables them to stand firm in their faith and rejoice in the hope of experiencing GOD’S glory.

Verse 3: “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;”

Paul emphasizes the importance of perseverance through suffering. Trials and tribulations are seen not as setbacks but as opportunities for growth in patience.

Verse 4: “And patience, experience; and experience, hope:”

The progression continues: patience leads to experience (character), and experience nurtures hope. This hope is essential because it is rooted in faith and past experiences of GOD’S faithfulness.

Verse 5: “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of GOD is shed abroad in our hearts by the HOLY GHOST which is given unto us.”

The hope that believers have will not lead to disappointment, for it is assured through the Holy GHOST who pours GOD’S infinite love into their hearts.

Verse 6: “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.”

Paul emphasizes CHRIST’S sacrifice for the weak and sinful (the ungodly) at just the right time, highlighting the magnitude of GOD’S grace.

Verse 7: “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.”

Paul contrasts human nature with CHRIST’S love. While people may consider dying for a good person, Jesus died for sinners, underscoring the depth of His infinite love.

Verse 8: “But GOD commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, CHRIST died for us.”

This verse encapsulates GOD’S unconditional love; demonstrating that He loves us even in our sinful state, as evidenced by CHRIST’S sacrificial death.

Verse 9: “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

By being justified through CHRIST’S blood, believers are not only saved from condemnation but also shielded from divine wrath.

Verse 10: “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to GOD by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”

Paul emphasizes the transformation from being enemies of GOD to being reconciled through the death of JESUS. This reconciliation ensures believers’ ongoing salvation through His resurrected life.

Verse 11: “And not only so, but we also joy in GOD through our Lord Jesus CHRIST, by whom we have now received the atonement.”

The joy of believers comes from their intimate relationship with GOD established through JESUS CHRIST, who facilitated their atonement (the reparation for sin).

Verse 12: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”

Paul recounts the Fall (Adam’s disobedience), which introduced sin and death into the world, affecting all humanity.

Verse 13: “(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.)”

Before the Law was given, sin existed but was not accounted as transgression in the same way. The Law brought awareness of sin.

Verse 14: “Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.”

Death ruled over humanity from the time of Adam to Moses, demonstrating sin’s pervasive power. Adam is a type of CHRIST, setting the stage for redemption.

Verse 15: “But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of GOD, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, JESUS CHRIST, hath abounded unto many.”

Paul compares the consequences of Adam’s sin with the grace given through JESUS CHRIST. While sin brought death, GOD’S grace through JESUS Christ gives life abundantly.

Verse 16: “And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.”

The contrast continues: Adam’s one act resulted in condemnation, but CHRIST’S gift leads to justification, even amidst many sins.

Verse 17: “For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, JESUS CHRIST.”

Paul emphasizes that through JESUS CHRIST, believers receive not only grace but also righteousness, allowing them to triumph in life.

Verse 18: “Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.”

Just as Adam’s sin brought judgment, CHRIST’S righteousness offers justification. This is a profound statement about salvation’s universality.

Verse 19: “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.”

The obedience of CHRIST leads to many being made righteous, presenting the concept of redemption through obedience as opposed to disobedience.

Verse 20: “Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:”

The introduction of the Law made people more aware of their offenses. However, it also highlighted the surpassing power of grace over sin.

Verse 21: “That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by JESUS CHRIST our LORD.”

This closing verse reinforces the supremacy of grace, which, unlike sin that leads to death, results in eternal life through JESUS CHRIST.

Let’s Summarize Romans Chapter 5:

In Romans 5:1-21, Paul presents a powerful theological argument about justification by faith and the transformative power of grace. Through JESUS CHRIST, believers receive peace with GOD, even amidst tribulations. Paul contrasts the consequences of Adam’s sin that brought death with the grace found in CHRIST, which offers eternal life and righteousness. Ultimately, he emphasizes that grace abounds even more than sin, highlighting GOD’S everlasting love and the promise of salvation.
