Revelation Chapter 3

Welcome to a new Bible Study of Revelation, Chapter 3:

Let’s reason and take an inspiring verse by verse look at “Revelation 3:1-22“, followed with a Summary and Prayer.

Verse 1: “And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of GOD, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.”

JESUS introduces Himself as the one who possesses the “seven Spirits of GOD,” indicating completeness and divinity. This verse highlights the condition of the church in Sardis; they have a reputation of being alive but are spiritually dead. It serves as a reminder that outward appearances can be deceiving.

Verse 2: “Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before GOD.”

Here, JESUS encourages the church to be vigilant and to reinforce what remains. It implies an urgent call to action acknowledging spiritual weakness and taking steps to revive their faith. The importance of vigilance in one’s spiritual life cannot be underestimated.

Verse 3: “Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.”

The call to remember their initial faith and teachings is crucial. The admonition to “hold fast” emphasizes perseverance and commitment to GOD’S truth. The warning about CHRIST’S return illustrates His sudden and unexpected nature, urging believers to live with readiness.

Verse 4: “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.”

Despite the church’s overall spiritual condition, there is a remnant who is faithful. Their purity is acknowledged and rewarded with the promise of walking with CHRIST, symbolized by white garments. This speaks to the hope that remains even in troubled times.

Verse 5: “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.”

Victory in faith is promised to those who overcome. The symbolism of “white raiment” reflects righteousness and purity. The assurance of names being unblotted from the book of life highlights the security of salvation and the intimate acknowledgment by Christ Himself before the Father.

Verse 6: “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”

This phrase emphasizes the importance of listening to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Each message delivered to the churches serves as instruction not only for that congregation but for all believers. Heeding GOD’S voice is crucial for spiritual growth.

Verse 7: “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth.”

The description of CHRIST as holy and true reassures believers of His authority. The “key of David” represents access and sovereignty over GOD’S kingdom. This verse reflects GOD’S control and the assurance that He opens doors for His followers that no one can close.

Verse 8: “I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.”

CHRIST commends the church for its faithfulness despite limited resources. The “open door” symbolizes opportunities for ministry and growth, encouraging them to seize what GOD has provided. Faithfulness in small things leads to greater blessings.

Verse 9: “Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.”

JESUS reassures the faithful that their allegiance to Him will ultimately be recognized, even by those who oppose them. This promise of vindication demonstrates divine justice and love for His true followers.

Verse 10: “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.”

The commitment to GOD’S marvelous, righteous word earns protection from impending trials. The “hour of temptation” signifies tribulation, indicating that GOD watches over those who are faithful. It’s a powerful assurance of divine care amidst circumstances.

Verse 11: “Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.”

The urgency of CHRIST’S return is reiterated. Believers are urged to maintain their faith and possessions in CHRIST to ensure their spiritual rewards. This implies that our actions and perseverance lead to eternal accolades.

Verse 12: “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my GOD, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my GOD, and the name of the city of my GOD, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my GOD: and I will write upon him my new name.”

Overcomers are promised a permanent place in GOD’S presence, signifying stability and honor. The engraving of GOD’S name denotes belonging and identity, emphasizing the relationship believers have with GOD.

Verse 13: “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”

Again, the call to listen to the Holy Spirit emphasizes the importance of understanding and applying the messages directed to the churches. Spiritual discernment is vital.

Verse 14: “And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of GOD.”

CHRIST’S self identification as the “Amen” reflects His ultimate truth and faithfulness. As the “beginning of creation,” His authority as the Creator establishes the foundation of His glorious, fulfilling message.

Verse 15: “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.”

The Laodiceans are criticized for their lukewarmness, which is neither passionate nor completely absent. This serves as a warning against complacency in faith, urging believers to have fervent commitment.

Verse 16: “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth.”

Lukewarmness is distasteful to GOD, suggesting that genuine faith cannot be neutral. The imagery of being “spewed out” indicates severe consequences for spiritual apathy.

Verse 17: “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:”

Material wealth led the Laodiceans to self sufficiency, blinding them to their true spiritual state. This highlights the danger of relying on earthly possessions over spiritual well-being.

Verse 18: “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.”

JESUS offers counsel on obtaining true spiritual wealth through trials (“gold tried in the fire”) and righteousness (“white raiment”). The metaphor of the “eyesalve” invites believers to gain true insight and understanding.

Verse 19: “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”

His rebuke comes from love, pointing to the necessity of discipline in spiritual growth. A call to zeal and repentance encourages a turnaround from wrong paths to a life of faith and obedience.

Verse 20: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

This verse illustrates CHRIST’S desire for fellowship with His followers. The imagery of knocking signifies patience and grace. Opening the door symbolizes acceptance and relationship, emphasizing the personal nature of faith.

Verse 21: “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.”

The promise of sharing in CHRIST’S authority highlights the honor and rewards for those who triumph in faith. It serves as a reminder that overcoming trials leads to eternal fellowship with GOD.

Verse 22: “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”

Conclusively, this recurring call to listen reinforces the key message that every believer must be attentive to GOD’S Holy Spirit to truly understand and apply His will.

Lets Summarize Revelation Chapter 3:

Each message highlights spiritual conditions, opportunities for growth, warnings against complacency, and the promise of divine assurance and rewards for faithfulness. The overarching themes include the importance of vigilance, the call to repentance, the value of true wealth and purity, and CHRIST’S desire for intimate fellowship with His followers. This passage encourages believers to reflect on their spiritual state, maintain fervent faith, and embrace the transformative power of GOD’S promises.
