Isaiah Chapter 17

Welcome to a new Bible Study of Isaiah chapter 17:

Let’s reason and take an inspiring verse by verse look at “Isaiah 17:1-14“, followed with a Summary and Prayer.

Verse 1: “The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.”

This opening verse introduces a prophecy concerning Damascus, a prominent city and the capital of Syria. It emphasizes the inevitable judgment of GOD.

No matter how strong or fortified a city or situation may appear, GOD’S divine plans and purposes will always prevail.

Verse 2: “The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.”

Aroer was a city located east of the Jordan River, indicating desolation and abandonment. However, the mention of flocks suggests a return to peacefulness when destruction comes to an end.

After hardship, peace can be found. GOD can bring tranquility even in the aftermath of judgment.

Verse 3: “The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.”

This verse underscores the fall of both Ephraim (Israel) and Damascus, suggesting that both nations will be humbled. The “remnant of Syria” will end up as insignificant as Israel without GOD’S glory.

GOD’S glory is paramount; without it, nations and individuals are reduced to nothing.

Verses 4-6: “And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean. And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim. Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD GOD of Israel.”

The reduction in Jacob’s glory signifies a loss of prosperity and strength. However, remnants remain, indicating GOD’S grace still lingers.

Even in times of despair, GOD preserves remnants of hope. Trust that GOD will provide sustenance and strength despite challenges.

Verse 7: “At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.”

This verse hints at a spiritual awakening where people turn back to GOD amid destruction. It emphasizes reliance on GOD as the mighty Creator.

In our hardest moments, let us look towards GOD our Provider and Sustainer. Turning to Him invites restoration and renewal.

Verses 8-9: “And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves or the images. In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be desolation.”

This speaks to the futility of idolatry and reliance on human made structures. When all that we depend on fails, GOD is the one who remains steadfast.

Let us forsake any false idols in our lives and place our hope solely in GOD, whose strength is everlasting.

Verses 10-11: “Because thou hast forgotten the GOD of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips: In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish; but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.”

The consequences of forgetting GOD lead to failed efforts and unfruitful labor. The “pleasant plants” symbolize frivolous pursuits that will ultimately disappoint.

Remembering GOD and recognizing Him as our strength leads to a fruitful and fulfilling life. He should be the foundation of every endeavor.

Verses 12-13: “Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters! The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but GOD shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.”

This passage reflects the tumultuous nature of worldly conflicts and the clamor of nations. Yet, GOD promises to rebuke and scatter them.

No matter how chaotic life may seem, GOD remains in control. He is able to silence the noise and calm the storms in our lives.

Verse 14: “And behold at eveningtide trouble; and before the morning he is not. This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.”

The fleeting nature of troubles illustrates that though challenges may come, they are not permanent. GOD’S deliverance is quick.

Every night of despair will eventually pass; joy comes in the morning. Trust that GOD’S rescue is on the way!

Let’s Summarize Isaiah chapter 17:

Isaiah 17:1-14 presents a prophecy of judgment against Damascus and emphasizes the futility of relying on anything other than GOD. It reminds believers of the consequences of turning away from GOD and placing trust in human efforts and false idols. Amidst warnings of desolation and the chaos of nations, this chapter offers hope through the promise of restoration and the enduring presence of GOD. Even in trials, those who seek the LORD almighty will find their strength and sustenance.
