Zechariah 14

Welcome to the final Bible Study of the last book of Zechariah, Chapter 14:

Verse 1: “Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.”

This verse sets the tone, proclaiming the coming of the LORD. It emphasizes that GOD will judge the nations and restore His people, highlighting the certainty of His return and the promise of deliverance for those who are faithful.

Verse 2: “For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.”

This vers speaks to the trials and tribulations that will come upon Jerusalem. It reminds us that while GOD allows struggles, He also preserves a remnant of His people. Even in despair, there is hope for survival and restoration.

Verse 3: “Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.”

Here, GOD assures us of His active involvement in our struggles. He fights for His people, echoing historical battles where He showed His power. We are reminded that we are not alone; GOD intervenes on behalf of those who trust in Him.

Verse 4: “And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.”

The prophecy of CHRIST’S return is highlighted here, as His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives. It symbolizes a physical and spiritual upheaval that brings transformation. GOD’S presence will bring change and new beginnings.

Verse 5: “And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my GOD shall come, and all the saints with thee.”

The imagery of fleeing highlights the urgency and seriousness of the situation. However, it also underscores that GOD will be with His people. His coming also includes the saints, emphasizing the assurance of His mighty presence and the gathering of believers.

Verse 6: “And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:”

This indicates a time of uncertainty and change, reflecting the complexity of GOD’S divine plans. It suggests a spiritual reality that transcends physical light and dark, GOD’S fulfilling truth and presence will prevail.

Verse 7: “But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.”

GOD’S timing is perfect and distinct. This day will be significant, and even in darkness, His light will glorious shine. This verse encourages us to trust in GOD’S timing and His ability to bring glorious light into our lives.

Verse 8: “And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.”

Living waters symbolize spiritual renewal and sustenance. Jerusalem becomes a source of life, showing that GOD nourishes His people through His Spirit, offering hope and refreshment in every season.

Verse 9: “And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.”

A beautiful, fulfilling declaration of GOD’S’s sovereignty is made. This speaks of unity and the ultimate reign of GOD over all creation. It inspires hope that one day, every knee will bow before Him, recognizing His Lordship.

Verse 10: “All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin’s gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel unto the king’s winepresses.”

The transformation of the land signifies the physical and spiritual renewal that GOD will bring. It encourages us that GOD can change our circumstances and lift us up from our situations.

Verse 11: “And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.”

This verse is a promise of safety and peace for those who dwell in the LORD. It reassures us that GOD can bring stability even after tumultuous times. His ultimate divine plan for His people is one of safety and security.

Verse 12: “And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.”

The severity of judgment against those who oppose GOD highlights His righteousness. It serves as a cautionary reminder of the consequences of rebellion against GOD’S will.

Verse 13: “And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbor, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbor.”

This verse illustrates chaos and confusion among those who are against GOD. It reminds us of the importance of standing firm in our faith amidst conflict, trusting that GOD’S’s righteousness will ultimately prevail.

Verse 14: “And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance.”

GOD will empower His people to stand and fight. The mention of gathering wealth signifies GOD’S provision for His people. Through our struggles, we are often recipients of GOD’S blessings.

Verse 15: “And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague.”

The plague that affects the animals emphasizes the totality of GOD’S’s judgment over His enemies. All creation is affected by righteousness, reminding us of the interconnectedness of life and GOD’S authority over all.

Verse 16: “And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.”

Post-judgment, the survivors will acknowledge GOD, demonstrating that His mercy always prevails. This invites us to reflect on the importance of worship and the festivals that remind us of our intimate relationship with our almighty dear LORD.

Verse 17: “And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.”

GOD desires worship from all nations. This shows the necessity of worshiping Him and the consequences of turning away from Him. It is a call to be devoted to GOD in spirit and truth.

Verse 18: “And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.”

This reiterates the theme of accountability in worship. GOD desires sincere worship from all, and those who choose to ignore that will face His discipline.

Verse 19: “This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.”

The dispersal of blessings and consequences for rejecting GOD’S divine plan for worship emphasizes His sovereignty. A reminder that our relationships with GOD are crucial, and neglecting them has ramifications.

Verse 20: “In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, Holiness unto the LORD; and the pots in the LORD’S house shall be like the bowls before the altar.”

This verse represents the transformation where even the mundane will proclaim holiness. It reflects how GOD’S glory transforms all aspects of life, calling us to live our lives as sanctified for His service.

Verse 21: “Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.”

Every vessel will be holy, indicating GOD’S mighty presence among His people. The Canaanite’s absence symbolizes the removal of sin and corruption, inspiring us to strive for holiness in our lives.

Let us Pray:

Dear LORD, almighty HEAVENLY FATHER, We come before You with gratitude for Your marvelous, righteous Word, which is our guide and our comfort.
