Welcome to a new Bible Study of Romans Chapter 3:
Let’s reason and take an inspiring verse by verse look at “Romans 3:1-31“, followed with a summary and prayer.
Verse 1: “What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?”
Paul begins by raising a question about the benefits of being Jewish and observing circumcision. He acknowledges the unique position of the Jewish people in GOD’S redemptive plan.
Verse 2: Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of GOD.”
Paul answers affirmatively that the Jews have great advantages, particularly because they were entrusted with the Scriptures, or the oracles of God, which reveal His will.
Verse 3: “For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of GOD without effect?”
Here, Paul anticipates objections and clarifies that the unbelief of some does not negate GOD’S faithfulness to His promises.
Verse 4: “GOD forbid: yea, let GOD be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.”
He emphasizes GOD’S absolute truthfulness and the fallibility of human beings, referring to GOD’S justice and righteousness as seen in His judgments.
Verse 5: “But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of GOD, what shall we say? Is GOD unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man.)”
Paul introduces a hypothetical argument: if human sin highlights GOD’S righteousness, does that mean GOD is unjust when He punishes sin?
Verse 6: “GOD forbid: for then how shall GOD judge the world?”
Paul refutes the idea, affirming that GOD must be just in judgment; otherwise, His role as the judge of the world is undermined.
Verse 7: “For if the truth of GOD hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?”
He acknowledges the paradox that some might argue that lies can enhance GOD’S truth, but he insists this reasoning is flawed.
Verse 8: “And not rather, as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say, Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.”
Paul addresses accusations against him and counters the idea that one should do evil for good outcomes, indicating that such thinking leads to condemnation.
Verse 9: “What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;”
Paul affirms that no one is inherently better; both Jews and Gentiles are equally guilty of sin.
Verse 10: “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”
He cites Scripture to emphasize the universal nature of sinfulness, underscoring that nobody is righteous by their own merits.
Verse 11: “There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after GOD.”
Paul continues to show that no one naturally seeks GOD; humanity’s inclination tends toward sin.
Verse 12: “They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
This verse highlights the collective nature of human depravity; all have gone astray.
Verse 13: “Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:”
Paul uses vivid imagery to describe the corrupt nature of human speech and the deceitfulness present in humanity.
Verse 14: “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:”
Here, Paul continues the theme, pointing to the negativity of human expressions, which reflect inner corruption.
Verse 15: “Their feet are swift to shed blood:”
This verse reflects on the violent tendencies of humanity, underlining the consequences of sin in actions.
Verse 16: “Destruction and misery are in their ways:”
Paul indicates that sin leads to chaos and suffering these are the outcomes of deviating from GOD’S divine ways.
Verse 17: “And the way of peace have they not known:”
Sin disrupts peace, both individually and communally, indicating a disconnection from GOD, who is the source of peace.
Verse 18: “There is no fear of GOD before their eyes.”
The absence of a true reverential fear of GOD signifies the moral and spiritual condition of humanity.
Verse 19: “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before GOD.”
Paul clarifies that the law serves to reveal sin and bring accountability, emphasizing humanity’s guilt before GOD.
Verse 20: “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”
He concludes that adherence to the law cannot achieve justification; instead, the law reveals our sinfulness.
Verse 21: “But now the righteousness of GOD without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;”
Paul transitions to the revelation of GOD’S righteousness apart from the law coherent with, yet distinct from, the Old Testament.
Verse 22: “Even the righteousness of GOD which is by faith of JESUS CHRIST unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:”
This righteousness is accessible to all through faith in JESUS CHRIST, countering any notions of favoritism among people.
Verse 23: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of GOD;”
This is a crucial verse affirming the universal reality of sin’s impact on everyone.
Verse 24: “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in CHRIST JESUS:”
Here, Paul introduces the core of the glorious fulfilling Gospel, justification by grace through faith in CHRIST JESUS, emphasizing it is a gift.
Verse 25: “Whom GOD hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of GOD;”
CHRIST’S role as the propitiation underscores His sacrificial death, which reconciles GOD and humanity.
Verse 26: “To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in JESUS.”
This verse highlights GOD’S dual role as both just and justifier, fulfilling righteousness through JESUS.
Verse 27: “Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.”
Paul emphasizes that boasting is irrelevant in salvation, as it is based on faith, not works.
Verse 28: “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”
Another pivotal affirmation that faith is the sole means of justification, freeing believers from the law’s demands.
Verse 29: “Is He the GOD of the Jews only? is He not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:”
Paul reinforces the inclusivity of the glorious fulfilling Gospel, asserting GOD’S universal reach beyond Jewish heritage.
Verse 30: “Seeing it is one GOD, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.”
Paul points out that there is one GOD who justifies all through faith, regardless of their background.
Verse 31: “Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.”
Paul concludes by affirming that faith does not nullify the law; instead, it upholds it by fulfilling its purpose of pointing to CHRIST.
