Revelation Chapter 4

Welcome to a new Bible Study of Revelation, Chapter 4:

Let’s reason and take an inspiring verse by verse look at “Revelation 4:1-11“, followed with a Summary and Prayer.

Verse 1: “After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.”

This verse marks a transition in the book, shifting from the messages to the Seven Churches to a vision of heavenly worship and glory. The “door” symbolizes an invitation to understand deeper spiritual truths. The voice like a trumpet signifies authority and urgency.

Verse 2: “And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.”

John’s immediate transition “in the spirit” indicates a profound spiritual experience. The “throne” represents divine sovereignty, emphasizing GOD’S ultimate authority over all creation.

Verse 3:  “And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.”

The imagery of precious stones conveys brilliance and majesty. The jasper and sardine stones symbolize purity and the beauty of GOD’S presence. The rainbow, reminiscent of GOD’S promise in Genesis, speaks of hope and covenant.

Verse 4: “And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.”

The twenty-four elders are often interpreted as representing the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles, symbolizing the unity of GOD’S people. Their white garments signify righteousness, and the crowns reflect victory and authority in GOD’S kingdom.

Verse 5: “And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of GOD.”

The lightnings and thunderings convey the majesty and power of GOD. The seven lamps symbolize the fullness of the Holy Spirit, indicating divine presence and activity.

Verse 6: “And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.”

The sea of glass reflects purity and serves as a barrier between GOD’S holiness and the chaos of the world. The four living creatures, often interpreted as representations of GOD’S creation, showcase GOD’S authority over all creatures.

Verse 7: “And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.”

These creatures represent the fullness of creation, linking to the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). They embody strength (lion), sacrifice (calf), humanity (man), and spirit (eagle).

Verse 8: “And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, LORD GOD Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.”

The six wings signify their readiness to serve GOD, and they are constantly engaged in worship. The threefold declaration of “Holy” emphasizes GOD’S absolute holiness and eternality.

Verse 9: “And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,”

The act of giving glory and thanks represents the proper response to GOD’S majesty. It invites believers to engage in worship and recognize GOD’S eternal nature.

Verse 10: “The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,”

The act of the elders falling down conveys humility and reverence. Casting crowns symbolizes that all honor and achievement ultimately belong to GOD.

Verse 11: “Thou art worthy, O LORD, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

This verse summarizes the reason for worship: GOD’S worthiness due to His creative power. It serves as a reminder that all creation exists for His glory.

Let’s Summarize Revelation Chapter 4:

Revelation 4:1-12” presents a magnificent vision of GOD’S throne room, emphasizing His sovereignty, holiness, and the worship that continually surrounds Him. The vivid imagery invites readers to appreciate the majesty of GOD, recognize our place in creation, and engage in worship. The portrayal of the twenty four elders and the four living creatures highlights the importance of honoring GOD in both our lives and our communities.

Let us Pray:

Dear LORD, almighty
HEAVENLY FATHER, we thank You for the incredible vision of Your throne that we find in Revelation. Help us to understand and appreciate Your majesty and sovereignty.
