Welcome to a new Bible Study “WHEN SUFFERING PRODUCES PATIENCE, AND HOPE IN GOD WILL NEVER FAIL“
Let’s reason and take an inspiring verse by verse look, at the Bible study references below, followed with a summary, and uplifting prayer request, before GOD’s Holy throne-room!
~ PART ONE – ROMANS 5:3-5 ~
“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;” (Romans 5:3)
The Apostle Paul opens with a declaration that strikes against every natural instinct of the human heart. He does not merely say believers should endure tribulations, he says we are to glory in them. The word “glory” carries the idea of boasting or rejoicing with confident assurance. Why could Paul make such a bold statement? Because he understood that tribulation is not an interruption to GOD’s purpose, it is part of GOD’s purpose. The word “worketh” tells us that tribulation is productive. It produces something of lasting value: patience (Greek: hupomone), which is not passive resignation but active, steadfast endurance under pressure. GOD uses the furnace of affliction to build the very character that glorifies CHRIST JESUS in us.
“And patience, experience; and experience, hope:” (Romans 5:4)
Paul traces a beautiful chain of spiritual growth, link by link. Patience, once produced by tribulation, does not stop there. It generates experience, the Greek word dokime, meaning “proven character” or “tested virtue.” Just as gold is refined by fire, the soul that has endured by GOD’s grace emerges proved, strengthened, and refined. And this proven character produces hope. This is not wishful thinking. This is a GOD anchored, triumphant confidence in what the LORD has promised. Every trial weathered in CHRIST becomes a fresh chapter in a testimony that says: GOD was faithful then, and HE will be faithful again.
“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of GOD is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” (Romans 5:5)
The chain reaches its glorious climax. This hope will never put us to shame. It will not disappoint, mislead, or leave us embarrassed. Why? Because it does not rest on human willpower or optimism. It rests on the unshakeable love of GOD. The phrase “shed abroad” is vivid, it means poured out, flooded, overflowed. The love of GOD has not merely touched the believer’s heart; it has been lavishly poured into it by the Holy Ghost, given to every child of GOD at the moment of salvation. The Spirit of GOD Himself is the living witness of GOD’s love dwelling within, sustaining every hope through every experience until JESUS CHRIST returns.
~ PART TWO – EPHESIANS 4:13–15 ~
Maturity, Stability, and Speaking Truth in Love:
“Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of GOD, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of CHRIST:” (Ephesians 4:13)
Paul describes the grand destination of the Body of CHRIST. The gifts given to the Church, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers are not ends in themselves. They serve a specific purpose: that believers grow together until a divine goal is reached. That goal is threefold. First, unity of the faith a corporate, shared, settled confidence in the truths of GOD’s marvelous righteous, empowering Word. Second, the knowledge of the Son of GOD, an intimate, ever-deepening acquaintance with the LORD JESUS CHRIST Himself, not merely facts about HIM. Third, a perfect man, maturity; the Body of CHRIST collectively growing into the full grown stature of JESUS CHRIST. Nothing short of Christlikeness is the measure GOD has set for HIS Church.
“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;” (Ephesians 4:14)
Spiritual immaturity has a recognizable symptom: instability. Paul uses the vivid image of a small vessel tossed helplessly on a stormy sea. The immature believer is blown about by every wind of doctrine each new theological trend, each flashy teaching, each smooth tongued voice.
Paul does not mince words: behind much false teaching is deliberate human cunning and calculated deception. The phrase “lie in wait” is a hunting term, suggesting ambush. The enemy of souls uses false teachers as instruments to ensnare the spiritually underdeveloped. The solution is not suspicion of everyone, but the kind of deep rooted knowledge of JESUS CHRIST and HIS marvelous, righteous, Word that makes a believer unmovable. Knowing that GOD’s truth is the believer’s great defense.
“But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even CHRIST:” (Ephesians 4:15)
Paul presents the positive alternative to childlike instability: speaking the truth in love. This is one of the most balanced commands in all of Scripture. Truth without love can become harsh, cold, and divisive. Love without truth can become sentimental, weak, and ultimately deceptive. Together, they form the environment in which the Body of CHRIST grows up. The direction of growth is unmistakable into HIM in all things. Every facet of the believer’s life thinking, speaking, serving, relating is to come increasingly under the headship of JESUS CHRIST. CHRIST is the HEAD. HE is the source, the standard, and the goal. All true spiritual growth is growth toward CHRIST and into conformity with HIM.
Let’s Summarise this Bible Study together:
~ Suffering, Maturity, and CHRIST as Our Goal ~
Taken together, these two passages paint a magnificent portrait of the Christian life from journeys to triumph, from infancy to full grown Christlikeness. Romans 5:3–5 begins where no one naturally wants to begin: in tribulation. Yet Paul insists that the believer can glory in suffering, because GOD is at work even there. Tribulation produces patience, patience produces proven character, and proven character produces a hope that will never disappoint, because the love of GOD has been poured into the believer’s heart by the very Spirit of GOD.
Ephesians 4:13–15 shows us where that growth is headed. The Church does not exist to maintain spiritual childhood. Every gift, every ministry, every sermon, every act of service is meant to move the Body of CHRIST toward maturity, toward unity in the faith, toward a deeper knowledge of the Son of GOD, toward the full stature of JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF. Immature believers are unstable, easily deceived, and vulnerable. But those who are growing anchor themselves more deeply in GOD’s truth and in CHRIST’s headship with every passing season.
The link between the two passages is profound: the very tribulations GOD allows are among HIS most powerful tools for producing the maturity Paul describes in Ephesians. The same GOD who pours HIS love into us through the Holy Ghost is the same LORD who leads HIS Church toward the measure of the stature of the fulness of CHRIST. Suffering and growth are not opposites in GOD’s kingdom they are partners in the same glorious purpose. The goal of it all is CHRIST JESUS, and the power behind it all is the love of GOD that never fails.
Let’s humble ourselves, and lift our prayers before GOD’s Holy throne-room:
Dear LORD, almighty HEAVENLY FATHER, we come before YOU with grateful and humbled hearts, for You marvelous, righteous Word. We thank YOU that YOU are a GOD who does not waste a single tear, a single journey, or a single moment of suffering in the lives of YOUR children. Forgive us, LORD, for the times we have run from tribulation rather than trusting YOU in it. Teach us, by the power of YOUR Holy Spirit, to glory even in our hardships, knowing with a trustworthy, peacefully understanding that Your hand is shaping us in patience, proven character, and a hope that is anchored in YOU alone. Dear LORD, almighty HEAVENLY FATHER, we confess that we have too often remained content with spiritual childhood. We have been tossed about by the winds of this age, distracted by voices that do not speak YOUR truth. We ask YOU, LORD, to establish us in the knowledge of Your beloved and only begotten Son, our LORD and SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST. Grow us up in HIM. Make us a people who speak the truth in love, who are not shaken by cunning doctrines, and who find in CHRIST JESUS alone our anchor, our standard, and our goal. Pour out YOUR unending love, afresh into our hearts by YOUR Holy Spirit even now, that we would walk in the confidence that YOU are for us, with us, and working all things together for our good and Your glory. May every journey we face deepen our roots in YOU. May every single day bring us one step closer to the fulness of CHRIST. To YOU, O GOD, and may all honor, praise and glory, be to You through JESUS CHRIST our LORD, and SAVIOUR now and forevermore. Thank You dear LORD almighty HEAVENLY FATHER’, Hear our prayers throughout the mighty glorious fulfilling name of JESUS CHRIST, Amen!
Much LoVe, JoY, Peace and Blessings to You, through JESUS CHRIST, our almighty, fulfilling dear LORD, SAVIOUR and REDEEMER!
